Birthday Shinanigans 2015

For my birthday this year I spent a whole week celebrating. I literally had cake starting from Monday through to Sunday… Unbelievable! My birthday landed on hump day (25th Nov) and thus I invited a few people to dinner for some yummy soupy noodles 😁

I wanted to go try out a new place in Chinatown called Viet Food but they had a large booking already and couldn’t accommodate us. I was their recommend Cay Tre in soho who had space. Most of us ordered Pho and others Bun. I had the Hanoi Garlicky Beef Pho which was spey yummy and actually had more flavour in the base than other pho I had in the past. The stock wasn’t oily at all and was bold. I really enjoyed it! The beef was tender and not so chewy. The noodles were delicious! Small thin straps that broke apart as you chew. Mmmmmm!

My friend also ordered Ox cheek which melted in you mouth. The meat was so soft! I guess it’s similar to a fish’s cheek which is the softest part of the meat.

Afterwards there was cake! (thank you Dee & Gen 💕) I could not believe the size of it! There was so much fruit covering the beautiful sponge. I love Chinese cream cakes, they da best!

I loved my cake! There was so much fruit on/in it!

Once food was chowed down, some of us headed to the arcade and others went home, tired from a long days work. We played the usual Pump It Up machine and Taiko Drums. I haven’t been in so long I feel rusty… I’m able to play level 10 songs on PIP ok so I may stay challenging myself to level 12/13s next 😁 For taiko, I didn’t know to many of the songs but I remember playing it on the wii(?). The arcade version is rather hard drive you had to almost smash the drum, causing my hands to cramp up after playing. It huuuurt! But was fun 😆

Would you recommend any songs to pay on Taiko, Pump or DJ Max Technika?

Until next time!

Mini Jurassic Golf

This was the first time I’ve ever played miniature golf. It was fun yet somewhat challenging. I was competing with my friends who was all aiming to get first place.

The way it works is that each player puts and tries to get their ball in the hole in the least out of tries. The player with the lowest number wins, and the one with the highest will lose.

This particular mini golf we went to was near New Malden and it had a Jurassic theme to it.  So there were many dinosaur models dotted around the whole golf course. The weather was slightly chilly but as it was cloudy,  it meant the sun wasn’t in my eyes and it was clear to see the goal.

We played two games and had to rush the second game due to time constraints. However,  I found I did slightly better under pressure. Ahahaha.

Have you played mini golf before? How was your experience?

Platter for 2

Bodeans. A meat feast fit for a king.

So for Manni’s birthday we all were invited to Bodeans for dinner.  Bodeans is a BBQ meat shack that boasts delicious barbecued meats in hearty portions. So if you’re a hungry hippo or feeling extra hungry, the this is the place for you.
The menu
The decor inside has a western ranch-like feel to it. With hanging wall ornaments to antler lamps.

As a group of 5, we ordered a dish each and a platter for 2 one (sidejoke) to share between us. The meal was absolutely delicious and we managed to devour the whole table of food. I think we consumed too much salt for one evening though…
Ready for their meal
And without further adieu, I present you the glorious meats. Which I like to call foodporn. You should look away now if you’re a herbivore…

Birthday party filled weekend

The first week of September is usually busy since I know many September babies. My friend PChan turned 29 recently, Jo turned 27 and Razel just turned 20 all in one weekend. Whew!

I wasn’t able to go to all the birthdays since it was going to be on the same day but luckily Chan moved his to Sunday so I could munch on lobster! 8B

Jo decided to have an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet where the guys went berserk and literally over ordered on sushi…

So much food...

We ordered a lot...

I was so stuffed afterwards since I was clearing up on our side of the table. Was a shame since my side didn’t eat a lot so it was hard to try everything in case I couldn’t finish it all.

For the after party, a small group of us headed to Tiko’s place to play Just Dance 4 and Singstar. It didn’t finish till 4am and we ended up dancing and giggling in the park outside to cool down from the heat. T’was a really fun evening.

PChan took us to Big Easy in Covent Garden where we dined on seafood and BBQ meats. The bill came to over £600!

I couldn’t go to Razel’s party which she held in a small bar called Barrio Central. The photos looked fun ^^

After all the eating and partying I’m now broke :( Why must yummy food be expensive?!!

Review: Bar Café Ciao, Leicester Square

Hidden on the main stretch of road between Leicester Square station and Trafalgar Square is this dessert house that serves ice cream in the form of famous Italian dishes.

Me with the birthday girl

They also create huge sundaes with very tasty ice cream! The flavours are very distinct and aren’t very sweet like from Haagendas. They also serve sorbets plus frozen yogurt for those who are watching their calories.

Dessert!

We went here on Krystal’s birthday party and the waiter was very kind enough to offer a very special sundae filled with fruit, ice creams and sorbets. It looked amazing!

She and her boyfriend managed to devour the whole sundae! I ate a normal sized one in my own! Hahaha. We were hungry children Lol.

Ciao make delicious sundaes!

I do like this dessert house and will visit often for the summer.

Review: Dishoom, Covent Garden

Dishoom is one of London’s famous no booking restaurants. It focuses on the grills and dry dishes of Indian cuisine and must not be mistaken for a curry house.

image
Menu

Once you’re inside Dishoom, you’re greeted by a bustling, dimly lit room filled with hungry diners. There are two floors with a bar and waiting area downstairs – very unusual. The decor is of a modern with kitchen tiled walls.

Food!!

The food portions are small. If your party is seeking food to fill you up then I would suggest to order different dishes to share and stock up on rice and naan. This is what we did and found out that most of the dishes can be spicy for those who are not accustomed to chilli food. Albeit the spice, the food was tasty but I thought was dry, especially with plain rice. We had only ordered one bowl of curry to share between 5 people and we only managed to scoop about 2-3 tablespoons worth each. There wasn’t many dishes that came with sauce, so if you can’t live without sauce with your meal, then either bring your own condiments or order the spicy curry.
image
Close up of curry

We enjoyed our meal though but I dong think I would return again simply because the amount of food served didn’t fill stomach. We also had go wait a good hour before a table was free and even then, it took a while to be served; but that may be because we kept asking for a few minutes longer to decide on food.

Afterwards, we went out for dessert at Bar Café Ciao. (Post soon)

What ‘no-book’ restaurants have you been to or want to try out?

Mike’s Birthday

Happy Birthday Mike!!

Even though it’s today, we celebrated it last Saturday with a mountain full of home cooked food and good company.

image
Look at all that deliciousness!

Mike had slaved away in the kitchen the whole afternoon and produced two large batches of chicken gyoza, green Thai curry, rice and Thai salad with sticky rice. It was soooo much to chow down! We managed to devour all the gyoza though!

Ready for bed!

It was a good night with such yummy food. It was a shame I had to leave really early the next day since I had my grading in Surrey.

Review: Nizumi | Choi’s Quarter Life Crisis

My ex-wifey turned 25 two days after my birthday and decided to hold her birthday party later that weekend.

image
Nizumi Table

We went to a Japanese restaurant that was owned by Koreans (I got so confused when I heard them speak). Here we had a £30 set menu that included an array of food including sashimi salad, sushi, tempura, a main and ice cream for dessert. There was a lot of food and I was stuffed by the end of it!
image
Our tempura ebi

The staff were very friendly although I thought their service was a little slow; this could be that we were such a big group (25) people get missed out. I had to flag someone down just to order my main (even though the waitress stood next to me and took my friend’s order but skipped me o.o) then later on, my drink (they failed to ask if I wanted a drink…)
image
Our sashimi salad

However, once everyone has sat down and got they orders, the food came steadily. There was a lot of appetisers which were a very good amount, however some of the sushi was shared between 4 people and there was sometimes only one piece of a type of sushi. I think people had to do Jan Ken Pon (rock, paper, scissors) or nab it quickly if they wanted it. It was fun. The food was delicious though. I really enjoyed the sashimi salad!
image
I think this was beef

Afterwards, the manager have us 30 mins free karaoke for being good patrons (we spent almost 1k!!) and also for charging the birthday girl extra for some guests who didn’t arrive. When our time was up, we didn’t want to leave and kept choosing more songs to the point the waiter pulled a face when we said, “one more!”
image
Sushiiii!

I had a lot of fun and it was very good food here. I believe everyone was very satisfied with their meal.

What’s the one thing you always order at a Japanese restaurant? I always try to try the sushi!
