Birthday Shinanigans 2015

For my birthday this year I spent a whole week celebrating. I literally had cake starting from Monday through to Sunday… Unbelievable! My birthday landed on hump day (25th Nov) and thus I invited a few people to dinner for some yummy soupy noodles 😁

I wanted to go try out a new place in Chinatown called Viet Food but they had a large booking already and couldn’t accommodate us. I was their recommend Cay Tre in soho who had space. Most of us ordered Pho and others Bun. I had the Hanoi Garlicky Beef Pho which was spey yummy and actually had more flavour in the base than other pho I had in the past. The stock wasn’t oily at all and was bold. I really enjoyed it! The beef was tender and not so chewy. The noodles were delicious! Small thin straps that broke apart as you chew. Mmmmmm!

My friend also ordered Ox cheek which melted in you mouth. The meat was so soft! I guess it’s similar to a fish’s cheek which is the softest part of the meat.

Afterwards there was cake! (thank you Dee & Gen 💕) I could not believe the size of it! There was so much fruit covering the beautiful sponge. I love Chinese cream cakes, they da best!

I loved my cake! There was so much fruit on/in it!

Once food was chowed down, some of us headed to the arcade and others went home, tired from a long days work. We played the usual Pump It Up machine and Taiko Drums. I haven’t been in so long I feel rusty… I’m able to play level 10 songs on PIP ok so I may stay challenging myself to level 12/13s next 😁 For taiko, I didn’t know to many of the songs but I remember playing it on the wii(?). The arcade version is rather hard drive you had to almost smash the drum, causing my hands to cramp up after playing. It huuuurt! But was fun 😆

Would you recommend any songs to pay on Taiko, Pump or DJ Max Technika?

Until next time!

Enigma Escapees

Enigma Escape: The immersive experience game

Enigma Escape recently opened up in London this month. They offer immersive escape games for groups of 2-5 people. Your group has 60 minutes to escape the locked room or forever be locked in there. Filled with lots of mind boggling puzzles, you’ll really find time fly by trying to decipher the clues.

The business was missing a sum of money to startup. Thus they opened it to the members of the public to donate funds towards their Kickstarter campaign. I thought it’d be a good opportunity to gather a group of friends to challenge our minds together! So I booked a 5-player package that came with a backers medal and name on a brick for the Founders Wall.

My friends and I managed to agree to the date of 19th July (it was so hard to get everyone together!) and we wandered to their place 3 minutes from Holloway Road station. As you enter you’re greeted by a friendly host, ours was Sam (one of the founders), who explained to us about the escape game in the comfort of their briefing room, equipped with snacks and comfy beanbags.

Next we knew we were locked inside a cage room and had to find our way out in under 60 minutes! We were stumped on a lot of the puzzles which made some of us worried that we weren’t gonna make it! Luckily we managed to escape with 7 minutes to spare and left with a collectors medal and holding our heads high. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to attend more!

Made it with 7 mins to spare!

I would totally recommended it to those who love puzzles and a challenge! We all want to find more to play now.

Would you try something like this?

Update: Sorry that I haven’t been posting. My phone has been stolen and thus I’ve lost all my photos, most which I wanted to use for blog posts. I’m therefore resorting to normal blogging without images for the time being until I can get back on track!

Kaichi Fieldtrip 2015

At Bournton-on-the-Water
Every year myself and a group of friends would attend a Japanese high school culture exchange programme in London for 5 days. This programme is part of their curriculum where they have to travel to England to practice their English, as well as sight see and conduct a presentation to their group leader (me).
My group at the model village
I found the experience fun and I also met a lot of new friends including other students who weren’t part of my group.
At Hampton Court Gardens
Sometimes it was hard to communicate as some students had lower understanding of English than others which meant I needed to be a lot patient with them to think about their answers.  Us group leaders tried to play all sorts of games with the students such as hangman, Mafia (they loved this), wink murder, uno, card games, Chadrades, observational games etc. These helped us build rapport with the students and engage with them to use English.
Mucking around
We went to a few attractions in London for a couple of days. These included Bournton-on-the-Water,  a lovely little English village that was the home of Brum the little car. The National Gallery, British Museum and Hampton Court. I think Bournton-on-the-Water was the most loved as it captures the beauty of England at best.
Lunch time!
At the farewell party we played some mini games including Bingo and Sumo Clap. Afterwards, it was a photo taking session with all the students and at the end they were all singing One Direction’s We’re on fire.

It was a lovely evening with lots of tears and cried of joy.
Saying out farewells
Many happy memories were made on this trip and I hope to see my group again soon near the end of the year ^^

Mini Jurassic Golf

This was the first time I’ve ever played miniature golf. It was fun yet somewhat challenging. I was competing with my friends who was all aiming to get first place.

The way it works is that each player puts and tries to get their ball in the hole in the least out of tries. The player with the lowest number wins, and the one with the highest will lose.

This particular mini golf we went to was near New Malden and it had a Jurassic theme to it.  So there were many dinosaur models dotted around the whole golf course. The weather was slightly chilly but as it was cloudy,  it meant the sun wasn’t in my eyes and it was clear to see the goal.

We played two games and had to rush the second game due to time constraints. However,  I found I did slightly better under pressure. Ahahaha.

Have you played mini golf before? How was your experience?

Heroes of Storm UK Launch Party

Heroes of the Storm recently held a launch party at Old Billingsgate in London where many fans and gamers attended. I happened to be lucky enough to get a free ticket at the time.

For a free event it was rather nicely kitted out. There was a main stage where everything happened,  they gave out some freebies (including a champion and free skin), photo booths, computers to play the game (although you may as well played at home), free bar, a shop and a DJ stage where Madeon played.

We look so cool

Although I’ve only been introduced to the game recently, I wasn’t an avid fan but seeing them unveil their new champion on the night was something to experience. The cheers and noise from the crowd and amazing and actually being in the midst of people so passionate about the same thing was overwhelming. I loved that atmosphere and really enjoyed my time.

Madeon’s stage as the ending sequence was really well setup.  He had a DJ set,  really sweet screen setup and lots of bright and colourful lights. It really felt like a rave! However I don’t think we’re the right audience as most of the attendees would grab out their smart phone to record and Snapchat this moment.  Even I ended up Instagramming a snippet! You can also watch the full event on Youtube!

I would love to attend another event like this although I would have expected more attractions and things to do. I guess I was comparing it to the Final Fantasy Fan Festival from last year,  but that was a grand event that was paid for. So I think Blizzard did a good job.

Have you attended any interesting events lately? Any upcoming ones you’re excited about?

Review: Roast, Borough Market

I went to London Bridge to meet up with friends for dinner. The original restaurant we wanted to go to was packed so we ended up wandering to Borough Market. I didn’t realise that there was a whole street of yummy restaurants!

We ended up choosing a fancy restaurant above Borough market called Roast. Inside, the decor seemed like fine dining with love music and a beautiful bar.

The food was delicious! We ordered a lot and the portions were healthy.

Cinderella Exhibition, Leicester Square

image
Interactive book

After having dinner with friends in London, we walked past Leicester Square and found out there was a few Cinderella Heritage exhibition, by Swarovski, still open for entry.

Beautiful sketches

It contained items, drawings, merchandise and props from the original Disney film in 1950, plus the current Cinderella film. Cinderella was Disney’s 12th animation, the first being Snow White ^^

The exhibition was very beautiful and also allowed us to try on the glass slipper made from Swarovski crystals! Cinderella’s ball gown was also adorned with many miniature crystals and delicate butterflies to make her dazzle in front of her Prince.
image
The props and costumes were absolutely stunning. The crystal shoe also doesn’t actually fit anyone… It was CGI’ed onto the actress’s foot. Like how it for me here!

I really need to make time to see the actual film now! Have you seen it yet?

BTSF

My last weekend was a rather long one. My whole TKD group participated in the BSTF Nationals where poomsae competition was on Saturday and fights happened on Sunday.

image
Selfie time!

The Nationals were hosted up in Worcester, home of the famous Worcester sauce. We all travelled up on Friday evening by coach. However as I wasn’t sure about making it on time,  I went via Cameron’s car with Charlotte in the passenger seat who was blasting out music the whole way (felt like raving). It was over 4 hours due to traffic so both parties made pit stops to grab some food before arriving at the hotel.

I found Tsumtsums!

This time, it was better organised and actually explained to people what was happening, so on Saturday Dee and I managed to fit in some tourist time and go see the cathedral in the morning. We arrived back at 3pm to watch the poomsae competition.

In the evening, dinner was hard to come by since everywhere in the town centre was fully booked. The group ended up ordering from different places. I just went to Zizzi’s nearby and ordered a carbonara for takeaway. Doesn’t feel like ordering a pizza from Papa John’s.

Nom

It was an early start for Sunday, 7am. So most of us were tired. There were many fights but unfortunately I was helping as a volunteer so I couldn’t watch most of it. At first I was making sure the electronic device for daedo gear was on the competitors correctly; a boring but important role to help push things along and reduce delay between fights. Then I was asked to do corner judging which was a lot more fun. However, it was hard to actually score points for definite in A Class since body shots needed a certain part threshold.

The experience days an enjoyable yet tiring one. We won 6 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze. Amazing. By the time we got back to London, it was past midnight so everyone conked out when they got home. I had to sleep on Josie’s couch some I was stranded ;-; Luckily she and her housemates took me in.
