Easter Joyfulness [Competition at End!]

Party Shinanigans

image
Easter was a while back and for the long weekend my friends and I had a karaoke party in Chinatown. We went to China City and was singing for a good 5 hours till they shut we couldn’t anymore.

image

We sung, we laughed, we raved and some of us got drunk – very drunk. I ended up taking 5 friends home to my small shared house as some of the guys were helping me with our drunk friends, plus they couldn’t get home. I always feel bad for leaving people stranded, plus Mc Donald’s had closed down now so there wasn’t a shelter to stay under till the first train home. Gotta let them sleep round right? Luckily my old housemate moved out so we had a spare room and bed to fit everyone in :)

It was a very good night and due to that I ended going karaoke again but to Karaoke Box in Soho. Karaoke Box is very swish and much nicer. However their song selection mostly consists of English charts and it’s all instrumental. Ergo, if you’re not an amazing singer you may hate hearing your voice. China City on the other hand has MVs that play with the choice of having the original singer singing along so it’s like an aid if you’re ‘tone deaf’ like myself hahaha.

My Duty as a Citizen
I was also on Jury Service for 2 weeks over Easter. I had to take time off work and do my duty as a UK citizen. It was an interesting experience but not as exciting as everyone made it out to be. All my friends seemed to be jealous of me and wondered why they weren’t picked. *le shrug*

I found sitting in the jury box can be a long and boring process because you are literally sitting there for a whole day listening to the same story repeated over and over by different people from their point of view.

If you ever get picked to do jury service, always bring something to keep you occupied like a book or a tablet with films on it. At the beginning you will be sitting for hours on end and if your name doesn’t get called, you’ll be waiting for some time longer. You must also be very open as you could be sitting on any case, it doesn’t go as smoothly as the shows on TV as there are always hiccups or things (matters of the law) that arise which can postpone trials. You’re also basically locked in a room with your fellow jurors when you’re not in court so remember to bring food and lots of snacks too to keep your energized and replenished throughout the day!

The duty is also a lot of responsibility as it’s up to you to find out if you believe the defendant is guilty or not guilty based on the evidence given. I ended being on 2 and a half trials. The last one took us 4 hours to decide on a verdict since we couldn’t all come to a unanimous decision. >.< I think it was one of the hardest decisions I’ve made in my life as it isn’t as simple as they make it in films/dramas.

Bake Off Competition and Barbeque with Friends

image

Since summer has arrived (finally!), my TKD group decided to hold a BBQ and AGM at someone’s house over the weekend. We also agreed to a bake-off where each team (2 members) would create a winning dessert of their own and take home the prize of pride.

image

My friend, Diana, and I teamed up together.  At first she wanted to make a Caramel Tart with Custard, an old school dessert we used to have back at school. We tried to bake it one evening and after 3 failed attempts we gave up… So much butter and butterscotch was wasted :( I found the caramel the hardest to make because I didn’t know if you should cook it on the heat, the heat and flour made the mixture look like crumbs and tasted like Indian sweets (just without the coconut). A few days later, my friend was told that we could actually buy pre-made caramel in a tin so we basically wasted an evening and a fridge of ingredients. D’oh!

image

When the day of the competition arrived though, we totally changed tactics and baked cakes we could and love. We baked 3 in total because we were so indecisive and had bought so many ingredients! In the end, we had baked Carrot Cake (my fave), Red Velvet Cake (the judge’s fave) and Victoria Sponge Cake (Diana’s fave). We baked so much because, basically, Diana wanted to win (hahaha). Our sweat and tears in the morning proved a success when they announced that she won (after a long chat with the judges, else my cake would have won Lol!)

We were up against forest fruits jelly and banofee pie.

There was also a BBQ going in the garden during our meeting which made us all drool over the chicken cooking on the grill. It smelt so good and meant people weren’t really concentrating. We had to break half way, gobble down the cooked food and then sit back to the meeting while the rest cooked – the smell teasing us.

The BBQ meat was so tasty and it was a very fun day. There was so much left over we all took some home :) We even played Tekken on the XBox which I haven’t touched in ages! I only really know to button mash though…

What did you guys do to enjoy the sunny weather? Did you take advantage and fired up a BBQ too?

Mario Kart Wii Tournament

image
The fun committee organised a big Wii tournament at work. We ended up playing Mario Kart since it had been really well received in previous Wii Tournament events.

image
The event was a success and it was so much fun for everyone. We organised four teams (Black Boo, Red Shy Guy, Blue Toad and Green Yoshi) where each had 4-5 team members; I was in Team Red Shy Guy. Quite a few people had to drop out last minute which wasn’t nice, others had to leave early as they had other commitments, but we still managed!

image
Each team had a team captain who chose which player to play each cup so each person had the chance to play 1 game of 4 maps. Then loints were awarded per game, 1st-10pts, 2nd-7, 3rd-3, 4th-1. It was harder that way and meant the leaderboard could change at any moment! So exhilarating!

image
At the end, there was a tie between two teams, Team Black Boo and Team Red Shy Guy! So we had one last battle where the MC decided the team captain from both teams should battle it out but I thought this was unfair since that had already decided the fate of the winners (my team captain played better), so I suggested that each team member played a map each from the selected cup (4 rounds, perfect) where players of similar calibre could race against each other. It also meant it was a team effort and involved everyone. This was a lot more challenging. I managed to get to first place from being 12th in the matter of seconds. That was a tough match!

image
So who won you ask?

Team Red Shy Guys! Woooooo! We hope to organise it again later this year because everyone really enjoyed their time racing with their fellow colleagues :) Which game that has a competition element would you suggest to play for approx 18 players?
