Announcement! New Store Launch at MCM Expo 2013

I’ve been meaning to start my own business for a while now but had never found the time to do it. After speaking to these motivational people who have made time for themselves to expand on their lives, it made me realise I was just procrastinating and stopping myself from achieving anything big.

“Chase your dreams”

So for MCM Comic Con tomorrow I will be there launching my new brand Kekiko. I will be there all weekend, from 25th – 27th October 2013! So come say hi!! We will be at stall W7!
Kekiko
We're near the front of the Expo!
I would also appreciate it if you would like my Facebook page as that would really help boost my morale and urge me to focus, plus work harder on this personal project.

Behind the Name

Keki PandaThe brand name was picked using my alias, Keki meaning ‘cake’ in Japanese since I absolutely love cake! I have a sweet tooth. Ko sounds like ‘co’, meaning company as in business or companionship. Therefore, put together it means Keki’s Company and also Keki & Friends. I have also named my two mascots, a couple of adorable little pandas, Keki and Kiko! So its all tying together and slowly being built upon. There is a lot to do and the range of items I’ve designed is small. I’ve just started to produce some hand made bookmarks for now and shall expand into more stationary, fashion and gift lines for the near future.

Wish me luck!

Cherry Blossom Nail Art

image

I bought the Arizona Green Tea drink a while back and fell in love with its packaging.

image

I really wanted to replicate the sakura tree design as a nail design so I went ahead and tried it! This nail design is very simple to do and requires no nail art tools. Although its not exactly like the image on the bottle it’s very close and looks really pretty in real life. The only thing that takes long is waiting for the nail varnish to dry…

Approx. Design Time: 30 minutes
Tools: Toothpick, Nail Varnish
Nail Varnish I Used:
– Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint in Dragon
– Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint in Greenberry
– Arezia code 841
– Arezia code 881
– Collection Hot Looks in 60 Midnight

Step 1
Coat your nails with a base coat so it doesn’t stain your nails. Paint your nails with a tuquoise green base, I used Barry M’s.
Optional: You can paint your index finger or ring finger a different colour to add an asymmetric design and make the art stand out.

image

Step 2
Using a toothpick, dip one end in a dark nail varnish such as black, blue or brown. We are going to draw the branches. Starting from the cuticle, draw a staggered line to the edge of your nail. This forms the base of your tree. Next add thin branches from the tree. Just dab and pull the toothpick to create other small lines.

image

Step 3
Using a light pink nail varnish, I used Barry M’s baby pink, dab your toothpick into the puddle and start creating small to medium dots on the branches in clusters of 3 or 4. These become your sakura flowers. Space them out and randomise where your flowers go.

image

Step 4
Pick out a darker shade of pink, I chose this one by Azziona, and using your toothpick dot some of this colour over the already drawn sakura blossoms. This forms a shadow effect and makes them look more 3D. If you want you can make some mini flowers with this colour as well.

image

Step 5
Dab your toothpick into the darker shade of nail varnish you used for the tree branches. Now create tiny dots in the centre or off-center in your larger flowers.

Step 6
Top off with a clear nail varnish to seal the who look. Now you are done.

Let me know in the comments below if you would like more of these nail art posts and what you would like to see me create next!

Misleading (almost androgenous) Toilet Signs

I’ve been to a fair amount of restaurants during my lifetime but whenever I go to the toilet I would have to search for it and then look for the sign that says “Ladies”. However not every bathroom has the sign in word format. Sometimes they will have it as an image or even sometimes a photo. Some of these signs are quite misleading and can confuse people. I know I was!

Here was one example I’ve come across:
image
image
It took my friends and I a little while to figure out which one was the ladies and had to pop our head in to make sure there weren’t any urinals inside. When I look back at the photo I think I understand what the artist/designer was thinking about. Men stand and women squat. I think that was his/her logic.

Have you seen any misleading toilet signs around your area?

Visiting Silicon Milk Roundabout

The SMR mascots were so friendly and huggable

I first heard about this event from my housemate who is currently searching for a new graphic job within the photography/design sector. I followed along, also with her sister and her sister’s boyfriend, to support her and check the event out; as well as for the freebies!

image
We managed to gather a lot of sweeties, cookies, pens and even fruit!

This event is a creative fair held for those who are interested in startups and would like to see the many opportunities available in the IT & design sectors. There were many startup companies such as y-plan, Badoo, moo.com, King (the guys who created Candy Crush) and Mind Candy (Creators of Moshi Monsters).

image
They were worldwide! Their stand was pretty and handed out free tea and coffee

There was also a lot of amazing freebies up for grabs plus the employees who allowed you to pick their brains :D I managed to collect a lot of free stuff but missed out on the tote bags and t-shirts because I wasn’t that interested in the IT development side of the company, so I didn’t chat to them. :( (or that I was shy/embarrassed to ask for a freebie tee…)

image
Some really cool installations!

If you’re searching for a job within the design or IT sector I would suggest going to this fair and talking to the employers to get an idea of what you’re signing up for, plus to see if you’ll fit into the place. These fairs are just for that!

This machine by Badoo pours your a drink all by itself!
