Review: Laser Tag at Bunker51, North Greenwich

image

So the Fun Committee organised an evening full of fun playing laser tag! It was at Bunker 51 in North Greenwich which is surprisingly easy to get to from North Greenwich tube station by public transport or via taxis.

image

When we arrived we were greeted, given forms to sign (our lives away) and handed overalls to wear. Our Marshall warned us to take off our t-shirts else you’ll get soaked/sweat rings so I heeded her warning and just wore the overalls over my shorts. These are surprisingly warm since they are thick but help keep you clean because the arena is very muddy! Yes, it was too hot (30 degrees) to be wearing overalls but I took it as a sauna and gym session.

We played for 1 hour. This fitted in four 10 minute games and included briefing. There was 3 modes:
– Teams
– VIP: Shoot the president 40 times to win the game
– Free for All

There were 5 hit areas on each armour: 3 on the gun and 2 on the body piece. I found the best place was to aim for the enemy gun unless you’re at close range to hit their body armour. The sensor on my gun was odd, I was unable to hit someone on their back even standing close to them. Ah well. Friendly fire is also on so it was hard to not shoot my teammates especially when they ran in front of me during open fire…

Team Mode Gameplay
Our group got split into two. So there were 7 on each side. We started on opposite corners and slowly moved around the room; dodging laser beams and hiding behind crates and blocks. The aim of the game is to score the highest amount of hits – one hit equals a kill. Team that “kills” the most wins. Green team won by a mere few kills.

VIP Mode Gameplay
The top player from the team who won the first game now becomes the VIP. The opposing team now has to assassinate the VIP while his/her team protects her. My friend was the VIP and we managed to get to him where his team and my team battled it out but he managed to hide himself very well in the last 5 minutes, so my team only hit him 20 times. Hahaha.

Free for All Gameplay
In this mode it’s ‘Every man for himself’. So basically shoot anyone you come across. The only problem was the arena was so small and there wasn’t many places to hide. So we were literally sitting ducks. It was still fun and cool to run around like headless chickens. One of my colleagues didn’t understand what a free for all was and was telling his “team” not to shoot him. I had to educate him mid-battle… bless (shows I play many FPS to understand these terms…)

image

The laser tag arena is fairly small but vast in the sense of space because there wasn’t a lot of hiding areas. Crates, trucks, tyres, buildings and shields are dotted around the place but it wasn’t a maze like some other laser tag arenas I’ve been to. However, it’s easy to see the flashing lights on the armour since its an open space. The laser tag arena is also very muddy, wet and dirty so you must be careful when running. Some of my group slipped and hurt themselves. The armour and gun were slightly weighty so if you’re not over 5’1″ you wouldn’t be able to handle it.

Overall the venue was easy to get to, small but fine if you have a large group. A lot of camping rather than running around. So unless you have a tactic to flank the other team you wouldn’t be able move forward.
The area is available exclusive to your party if you have at least 10 players. Drink and food packages are available but we didn’t get it. You will get really sweaty. All of us looked like we just jumped out of a waterfall (eww) so do bring a change of clothes or just wear the overalls over shorts. I thought it was value for money, £20 per person for an hour gameplay; although not the cheapest I’ve come across.
It was so much fun and everyone enjoyed themselves. Some people were playing unfairly but their sneaky tactics weren’t fruitful.

Hope you all enjoyed this post. Will you visit Bunker51? Or do you have another laser tag venue you prefer?

Mario Kart Wii Tournament

image
The fun committee organised a big Wii tournament at work. We ended up playing Mario Kart since it had been really well received in previous Wii Tournament events.

image
The event was a success and it was so much fun for everyone. We organised four teams (Black Boo, Red Shy Guy, Blue Toad and Green Yoshi) where each had 4-5 team members; I was in Team Red Shy Guy. Quite a few people had to drop out last minute which wasn’t nice, others had to leave early as they had other commitments, but we still managed!

image
Each team had a team captain who chose which player to play each cup so each person had the chance to play 1 game of 4 maps. Then loints were awarded per game, 1st-10pts, 2nd-7, 3rd-3, 4th-1. It was harder that way and meant the leaderboard could change at any moment! So exhilarating!

image
At the end, there was a tie between two teams, Team Black Boo and Team Red Shy Guy! So we had one last battle where the MC decided the team captain from both teams should battle it out but I thought this was unfair since that had already decided the fate of the winners (my team captain played better), so I suggested that each team member played a map each from the selected cup (4 rounds, perfect) where players of similar calibre could race against each other. It also meant it was a team effort and involved everyone. This was a lot more challenging. I managed to get to first place from being 12th in the matter of seconds. That was a tough match!

image
So who won you ask?

Team Red Shy Guys! Woooooo! We hope to organise it again later this year because everyone really enjoyed their time racing with their fellow colleagues :) Which game that has a competition element would you suggest to play for approx 18 players?

Bowling at All Star Lanes

The fun committee decided to organise an evening with dinner and bowling at All Star Lanes in Brick Lane.

All of us bowling
All of us! Was fun!

Bowling has always been fun for me, I would always throw a fluke strike and do stupid bowls every now and then. However it wasn’t the same case this time. Out of 16 people, I came last *sad face*. I kept getting gutter balls and not even able to throw a spare. The lanes seemed shorter and smaller than normal but I wasn’t sure if it were true or it was just the lighting… Finding the right bowling ball was hard too because there isn’t enough different balls on every caddy. There also wasn’t any spare racks, so you would have to take them from other lanes.

Nevertheless, I had fun and so did everyone else who attended. We had three teams:

  • Toxic Pirates

    Skull Ninjas Team
    Skull Ninjas Team
  • Mighty Vikings

    Toxic Pirates Team
Toxic Pirates Team (sorry for the blurry photo)
  • Skull Ninjas

    Mighty Vikings Team
    Mighty Vikings Team

(Cos I make up awesome team names!)

Of course if you play many MMOs you would know ninjas trumps all. I was in the Toxic Pirates who came second despite me scoring a measly 39 points (terrible but my excuse was that I took the fall of having last place hahaha). Then it was the Mighty Vikings at third place.

Bowling Medal
The medal people won!

I did enjoy our evening but the venue is smaller than your average bowling alley, but the American diner area is huge. Plenty of space for big parties and large groups.

All Star Lanes
The bowling alley

The menu is fully American diner type food such as Southern Fried Chicken, steak, burgers with chips and ribs. I had the ribs and they were nice but can be too barbeque-y if you don’t like a lot of the sauce. The half rack of ribs didn’t come was any chips so I was glad I ordered some croquettes to accompany my order. The Mac and cheese croquettes were really nice and if you’re a fan of melted cheese then you should try it!

Organising a Dubai Themed Party

I recently joined the fun committee where our group plans fun corporate events for the whole office. This month we’ve decided to organise a party to celebrate a new office opening in Dubai. We decided to order a large selection of European food from local restaurants, hold a quiz related to the city and have a video based on Dubai showing in the background while we eat.

It was fun to plan and organise. We split the tasks between the four of us and each helped draw up questions, order food and choose which videos to show. However there were some alight alterations before the big day and some colleagues weren’t able to come. However I managed to salvage the numbers and create enough teams for the quiz to generate some competition (shame I couldn’t partake! Would have loved some Amazon vouchers.)

image
Food!

It was a really fun filled evening, everyone enjoyed themselves even though some of the answers given to me on my quiz slideshow were technically out of date and so were considered invalid. I managed to pick it back up though and entertain everyone as the quizmaster.

It was a very tight competition as the winners won by one point. There was also a bonus round where the points won were to be used as a tiebreaker so one team was saddened that their bonus points could not be used, as it would have won them the victory.

image
We're all nomming happily

After the the quiz we ate delicious European food from the local Turkish and Lebanese restaurant. A lot was left over due to the fact many people had go leave early. So more for me! I managed to eat it for dinner, lunch the next day and dinner also! Yum yum!

On another note, MCM Expo is a week away. I’m really excited to participate and am ready to greet the crowd in my unicorn onesie. If you see me there come say hi (I’ll be at store AP8 Near the N8 entrance)!

Joining the Fun Committee

There is a committee at work that organises fun monthly events for the office and I’m privileged to be asked to join it. Well, people moved jobs and thus the committee members shrunk and they wanted someone creative on the team so here I am! There is currently 4 of us in the group but it may grow bigger should anyone else want to join.

It’s so nice to be able to organise something fun for the office and try new activities for free (the company pays for it)! So far I’ve seen Skyfall at the IMAX, went Go Karting, cooked dumplings for food day (I won a cook book) and visited a circus dinner party for Christmas. It has been fun and hopefully I can bring more to the table and plan some more exciting activities this summer.

We’ve started planning for the next few months and have a variety of activities in the pipeline, such as:

  • Dubai Themed Party
  • Scavenger Hunt
  •  Wii Party with possible BBQ (depends if we can get a venue)
  • Laser Tag
  • Picnic in the Park with Rounders
  • Regents Park Open Air Theatre
  • Team Building Event

It all sounds so exciting and I can’t wait to participate in it all!

Have you done anything fun recently that involves bonding/socialising that you would recommend us to go try?

With Love,
Keki xoxo
