Hot Pot at Krystal’s

image
For a weekend last year, my group of friends decided we would have a hot pot dinner. We all travelled down to Krystal’s flat where her boyfriend drove us to the Korean supermarket H-Mart and Wing Yip to get some fresh meats, vegetables, dumplings, noodles and hot pot supplies.

image
A hot pot is a Eastern way of cooking. It’s a great way to get a group of friends together to chat and play games since it requires zero cooking skill. Everyone has their own bowl and utensils. They place the food inside the pot of boiling soup and wait till it is cooked. Then they take the cooked food out, dip it in sauce, and nom! It’s such a fun way to eat.

I had never been to a Korean supermarket (H-Mart) before and was amazed by the amount of oriental foods widely available. It was here where I tried my first kimbap; it was soooooooo good! I haven’t found this somewhere near London before. It’s Korea’s version of sushi rolls but they use sesame oil to season their rice rather than vinegar. I tried the vegetarian and meat variety, I can say that the one with the beef filling was much tastier due to the juices it contained.

image
Our group bought so many snacks to take home. Some even got ice-cream mochi!

As there was a lot of traffic in the morning, we didn’t manage to arrive back to the flat till the afternoon to start the hot pot. Luckily, others only just started to turn up a minute after we set foot inside. We played the Wii while waiting for the soup to boil. ‘Just Dance‘ was the game of the event! We recorded so many funny videos. We’ve now gone on a mission to find the Korean ‘Just Dance’ version as it contains many popular dances and funny/sexy moves we would love the guys to try out! (I’m talking Bo Peep by T-Ara, Bubble Pop by HyunA and Gangnam Style by PSY) – We managed to find a Korean Dance Festival game which we played on the New Year.

Do you usually organise little gatherings like these with your friends? What do you normally do?

All of us on New Years

Happy New Year!

Wishing all my readers a Happy New Year filled with joyful events, wonderful times and a prosperous year.

All of us on New Years
All of us on New Years <3

Before the New Year, my friends and I went to the Christmas trail at Kew Gardens.

image
image
I found it disappointing since it wasn’t Christmassy at all. Yes there were pretty lights that illuminated the trees and path to help you be along your way but it wasn’t fancy at all. There were speakers that emitted robotic sounds which they (the scientists) believe are the voices of the aquatic plants.

image
So along the illuminated trail, there were people who were “talking” to the plants by chucking stones into the pond or jar. However my friend believes it is just the vibrations from the stone when it hits the water; I kinda believe that more. Anyway, the transcripts should be available online early April 2014.

image
For new years eve we all went round JoJo’s house for a teppanyaki night. There was a LOT of food so we all filled our stomachs, ready for the night ahead of us.

LETS COOK!

When the clock stroke midnight, the TV on, champagne was poured and we were slowly counting down to the New Year, anticipating for the fireworks of London.

The fireworks this year were amazing. There was soooo much flare, color and variation. I think we had the best seats in the house – in front of the wide screen TV – others at the event had to stand in the pouring rain.

After the countdown, we tried to release some sky lanterns with wishes written on. Although most of us knew it wouldn’t work due to the storm and high wind, we still tried. We managed to light both lanterns after a good 5 minutes trying to block the wind but before it could fill up with hot air, it started to burn the tissue paper and create a hole :( so even after releasing the lantern didn’t fly very far…

After our failed attempt at the sky lanterns we ended up back at the house singing karaoke to English, Chinese and Korean songs ^^

Playing Just Dance on the Wii
Posing for Just Dance on the Wii

Then at 4am we did up Just Dance on the Wii and did lots of boogie-ing. I found that the Korean dances had more challenging moves and actually make you move your whole body more then the English version. It also had Wonder Girls’ Nobody which Krystal and I plan to master lol!

I didn’t go to bed till 7am so I was really tired and had been leaving sleep until last night.

Hope everyone enjoyed the New Year! How were the fireworks for you?

My Office Christmas Party

image

We had our Staff Christmas Party on Friday after work. We went to Professor Truman’s Magical Laboratory in Brick Lane. It was really hyped up and everyone was expecting a spectacular show filled with magic, potions and dramatic lights. However we were disappointed with “lab rats” (people dressed in lab coats) playing poi and the a “robot” built by the mad professor just jiggying his bum. Errr I think you will find that I know friends who can play poi better and even with fire (yes health and safety I know), but if I had a robot on stage I would expect it to breakdance and not just bop to the beat then release some steam towards the ceiling from it’s guns. My table wasn’t very happy about the show provided – short and not exciting.

image

The food was edible but not great at all. On paper it sounded lovely…

  • Starter: Oven roasted cranberry chutney and brie tart (v)
  • Main: Oven roasted succulent breast of chicken, cooked in an infusion of fresh thyme, rosemary and farmhouse butter, served with creamy garlic and parmesan mash potatoes and freshly roasted honey glazed winter vegetables
  • Dessert: Chocolate caramel truffle laced with a raspberry and chilli coulis

However what we got was a cold cheese tart (the sauce was nice though), chicken on a bed of mashed potato with vegetables (tasted fake, cheap and vegetables were bitter) and lastly a chocolate vanilla pudding with wild berry compote (there wasn’t enough chocolate flavour and the berry sauce was too bitter/tangy, thus not a great pairing). Even the vegetarian meal took 20 minutes to serve, after bringing it to their attention our party needed 7 veggie meals; apparently we didn’t notify in advance and they didn’t have enough food. I was told the vegetarian meal was cold and tasteless, so instead of giving bs about how they don’t have enough to serve, why couldn’t they at least heat up the food?! Sorry for sounding all ‘Come Dine with Me’ style whining but we paid £80 per person for this event and the Fun Committee had to organise it 6 months before. So everyone’s expectations were high and wanted it to trump our last Christmas party.

image

The entertainment provided wasn’t so bad. There was a photo booth, casino tables, arcade games and a batak board. I always like photobooths. They are always so much fun ^^

image

The disco was boring. They hadn’t even kitted out the room; just filled it with smoke. Surly they could have hung some Christmas decorations up and placed a cool dance floor. The music at the beginning was too old school for me to know what the song was. It wasn’t until I had to leave (last train home) that the Christmassy ones came on =.= Oh well.

image

Despite all that I still had a good time with my work friends and got quite tipsy drunk lol. Couldn’t really walk in my heels, thank goodness that I brought my flats along!

How were all your Christmas parties? If you haven’t had your yet, are you looking forward to it?

On another note, I launched my online shop! I am also holding a big giveaway where you can win a large Molang Bunny (pictured). See details to enter here: Kekiko’s Grand Opening Christmas Giveaway

Professor Truman's Magical Laboratory
Professor Truman’s Magical Laboratory Show

Tomorrow is our staff Christmas party and we will be celebrating it in Brick Lane. The email about the venue sounds very cool. They are turning the Old Truman Brewery into a magical laboratory where performers, special concoction and fun galore will all come together. I can’t wait! I’ll be wearing the same dress I wore for my birthday because I want to get the most wear out of it! Hehe.

We will also be hosting our little secret Santa exchange tomorrow as well.

Christmas Tree
Our office Christmas Tree with presents underneath :)

Have you all completed your Christmas shopping yet? I certainly haven’t! For my close friends from school I bought mango vodka and baked a cupcake for them each.  They went down well ^.^ I’ve already bought a gift for one of my housemates and part of one for the other. As for my family I don’t know where to begin!! I’ve told them that we’ll shop in the Christmas sales for their presents. I’m finding it harder to find presents this year for some reason…

I started a little Christmas wish list which I spotted a lot of bloggers have been doing so I thought I’d jump on the band wagon! What do you think? It’s a lot of things for my nonexistent home. (Maybe I should put a house on my wish list…)

Cosmic Projector
Laser Cosmos Projector – For making the ceiling all pretty before dozing off to dream land
Voodoo Knife Block Set

Being Nerds and Geeks at the Science Museum

My friend Nat came up to London on her day off for a visit and we decided to go to the London Science Museum for some fun.

image

We haven’t been to the place in such a long time that everything had moved, changed or been renovated. It looked more modern than it used to but still a lot of floors to cover. There was a lot of exhibits but I really enjoyed the ones with the vehicles and planes. We even saw a VCR in there! Time flies…

image

We saw a cross section of a 747 and the amount of thin padding you have between the cabin and the external metal is miniscule. Its amazing how it holds up and scary at the same time!

image

The day was spent photo bombing each other at the museum and searching for the kids area; because that’s where all the fun lies!

image

We ended the day with nice food from Giraffe.

Thanks for coming up to visit me for an early birthday Nat!

What is your Science Museum like? Do you enjoy visiting museums?

Tiko’s Birthday at Big Easy

Prawns, Crab, Squid Seafood Platter!
Our Starters

Besides going to Bodeans, Tiko had decided to hold a second party with his closer group of friends at Big Easy near Sloane Square. This is an Southern American diner type foodie place that serves lobster and different types of barbecued meats.

Ribs and Prawns
Delicious Ribs!

We had pre-ordered our meal beforehand since we were a large party of 11 people. There was a mixture of meat and seafood being served on higher platters; it was so overwhelming! We devoured all the squid, prawns, mussels and prawn crackers that came first as we were all so hungry only to find that they were the starters.

After almost filling my belly I tried to leave room for my mains which came in massive platters filled with ribs, chicken and prawns slathered in bbq sauce. The second platter came with a selection of seafood, including lobster, prawns, crabs and more mussels. We also had four huge baskets of chips, coleslaw and also a bowl of baked beans. Mmmmm yum yum!

Chicken Wings and Squid Platter
Chicken Wings and Squid Platter

Everyone had very satisfied bellies and I had to roll out the restaurant. There was just so much food!

My food bill came to £40 (approx.) I think this was reasonable considering that I did eat quite a bit. However due to the nature of the food devoured (mostly meats) I think it could have been slightly cheaper. Well since everyone ended up sharing the platters they had ordered it was harder to actually split the food and the bill. So I didn’t mind. It was a birthday celebration after all ^^

Would you have been able to devoured this amount of food with your group of friends?

Another Year Older, Another Year Wiser

All my pressies! Thank you all so much!

It was my birthday on Monday 25th November. During the weekend I planned a day out on Saturday to play ping pong at Bounce in Holborn and then to have Italian at Isolabella.

At the Tae Kwon Do match!

Earlier in the morning I went to cheer on my team at a TKD tournament at Imperial College, South Kensington. It was a very intense battle since some of our yellow tag contestants hadn’t learnt nor don’t any form of martial arts before! The day was long and they all started to get very tired near the end of the day. However out of the 5 participants we enrolled into the competition, they brought back 3 silvers and a bronze. Whoop whoop! Well done to them! Everyone from UEL was rooting for them with massive banners and loud shouts. I think we were the noisiest bunch in the whole hall hehehe.

Once the competition was over, my friends and I headed to Bounce. Here I met up with other friends for drinks and games of ping pong. They even tried to play it with their phones!

image

image

We tried to introduce some fun ways to play it, such as sitting on stools or alternating the batter, but it still didn’t beat playing the game normally. :D

After 2 hours of the ping pong ball bouncing back and forth, we all headed down the road for some bellisolimo Italian at Isolabella.

image

On my actual birthday I went back home to spend it with my family. We had dim sum, did a bit of shopping and had a big feast back home. My aunt baked me a cake but I had to decorate it since she didn’t know how to draw Totoro. Oh well! XD Tasted gooood! I had a lot of fun. :)
