Birthday Shinanigans 2015

For my birthday this year I spent a whole week celebrating. I literally had cake starting from Monday through to Sunday… Unbelievable! My birthday landed on hump day (25th Nov) and thus I invited a few people to dinner for some yummy soupy noodles 😁

I wanted to go try out a new place in Chinatown called Viet Food but they had a large booking already and couldn’t accommodate us. I was their recommend Cay Tre in soho who had space. Most of us ordered Pho and others Bun. I had the Hanoi Garlicky Beef Pho which was spey yummy and actually had more flavour in the base than other pho I had in the past. The stock wasn’t oily at all and was bold. I really enjoyed it! The beef was tender and not so chewy. The noodles were delicious! Small thin straps that broke apart as you chew. Mmmmmm!

My friend also ordered Ox cheek which melted in you mouth. The meat was so soft! I guess it’s similar to a fish’s cheek which is the softest part of the meat.

Afterwards there was cake! (thank you Dee & Gen 💕) I could not believe the size of it! There was so much fruit covering the beautiful sponge. I love Chinese cream cakes, they da best!

Birthday girl
I loved my cake! There was so much fruit on/in it!

Once food was chowed down, some of us headed to the arcade and others went home, tired from a long days work. We played the usual Pump It Up machine and Taiko Drums. I haven’t been in so long I feel rusty… I’m able to play level 10 songs on PIP ok so I may stay challenging myself to level 12/13s next 😁 For taiko, I didn’t know to many of the songs but I remember playing it on the wii(?). The arcade version is rather hard drive you had to almost smash the drum, causing my hands to cramp up after playing. It huuuurt! But was fun 😆

Would you recommend any songs to pay on Taiko, Pump or DJ Max Technika?

Until next time!

Japanese Cuisine at Taro, Soho

image

I was invited to a friend’s birthday dinner last week at Taro, a Japanese restaurant situated in Soho, London. It was a a choice between here, Eat Japan or Little Korea because the birthday girl loves the Asian cuisine; mostly Japanese culture.

image

It is closer to Tottenham Court Road station than Leicester Square, but I had walked the wrong way a few times and even past the actual door! I think I would have found my way easier from Leicester Square if I started there, since I’m more familiar with the route from China town to Soho.

image

Taro, is a small Japanese restaurant with two floors. Although it has a lot of floor space, the first floor is used for takeaways and people to sit at a bar for a quick bite to eat. Similar to those 5-minute pitstop places in Japan.

image

The restaurant section is downstairs in the basement where there is a spacious area with benches. It could easily seat 80 people. Once sat down we were served almost immediately for drinks; I knew what I wanted since I arrived early than the rest of the group. Deciding what to eat was hard because there was a wide range in sushi, ramen and donburis. I ended up getting a korokke (fried mashed potato) and gyu don (beef donburi) with a glass of Calpico (milky lemonade drink). The food was nice and some of the noodle portions were large!

As per usual we all took lots of photos during dinner and before we ate, it was really funny.

The pricing of this restaurant wasn’t bad as everything is under £15. My meal totalled to approx £16 including service.
I would definitely be visiting again!

Raw Oysters at Wright Brothers London Review

My friend took me to eat raw oysters for the first time. I’ve always wondered what it would taste like since I’ve only seen people eat it on TV.

I’ve never really been a fan of cooked oysters due to its odd sea water taste, so I had a feeling I wouldn’t enjoy raw ones.

image
Our platter of oysters

There were three of us eating oysters that day and thus we ordered two different types that came in portions of 3. It came on a big platter filled with ice to keep the oysters cold, a lemon and some chilli sauce.

Salmon Starters

I was told to release the oyster from its cushion first which I found rather hard with the mini forks given. It took a while for me to wriggle the meat out of its shell. We then squeezed some lemon on each of our oysters and pours a little bit of juice on top.

Then in one swift movement “drank” the oyster and all the juices down the hatch and swallowed it whole. It was really odd as the salty taste was cancelled by the lemon and the chilli kicked in after. I repeated the process again but my friend suggested to chew on the oyster to get the full flavour, but I would not suggest this as it releases the full flavour of the sea in your mouth… You don’t want that.

Calamari Mains

The ambience of the restaurant was really nice but the service was slow. It took us over half an hour to order food because the waiters seemed to ignore us. Even the two leagues who sat down after us managed to order, eat and leave before we even ordered… Shocking!

My mussels as a main

Anyway the raw oysters would not fill you up unless you eat a lot, plus the cost can add up. Ours wasn’t so bad as it totalled to about £20 for 6 oysters. Still a lot though! We each ordered mains to feel more satisfied but only one of my friends was disappointed with her meal due to its miniature size. There was only four parcels in her tortelli and did not look like a size of a main meal at all so she had to order an portion of frites as extra afterwards.

The cost of the meal was under £20 which was reasonable but I don’t think I would visit again as the food portions weren’t great. The service was a bit lacking and I didn’t feel very well the next day (I had either caught food poisoning or a stomach bug).

We ended up eating dessert afterwards in SoHo which actually made me feel bloated afterwards.
